Bronx, NY - After making an impassioned speech to the graduating class at the 42nd Commencement Ceremony for Medgar Evers College held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Saturday, June 1st, Lowell Hawthorne was bestowed with a Presidential Medal from, William l. Pollard, President of the college.
President Pollard thanked Mr. Hawthorne for the stirring and inspirational challenge he gave to the graduating class of 2013. He said Mr. Hawthorne’s eloquent delivery of his life story was exactly what the students needed to hear. Hawthorne and the Golden Krust story is a powerful example of what happens when hard work and opportunity intersect.
Lowell Hawthorne, along with his family have built the largest Caribbean franchise chain in the United States which currently provides employment for over 1000 persons system-wide and has earned a reputation for being a good corporate citizen. Every year the company awards scholarships to deserving high school students in pursuit of a college education and this year will be no exception. To date, the company has awarded over 150 scholarships to students in the United States and in Jamaica. In August, the company is planning to disburse several more scholarships.
Mr. Hawthorne challenged the graduates, which numbered in excess of eleven hundred students, to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them. He said “armed with a Medgar Evers degree, seize the moment, align yourselves with those who share your vision to succeed and above all, hold true to your ideals, even when others can’t see them.”
In 2011, Mr. Hawthorne was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in recognition for his outstanding philanthropic contributions to the community.
